During the reign of Mikhail Fedorovich (17c.) the clerks of the Moscow Embassy Department made up special news updates for the Tzar. This hand written paper was called "Kuranty" ("The Chimes").The first printed newspaper in Russia appeared in Moscow in January 1703 by the order of Peter the Great and was called "Vedomosti" (Gazette). The newspaper gave a survey of events in the North War, the questions of foreign and domestic policies of Russia. Its first print run was 500 copies. Since that time the number of newspapers is rapidly increasing as well as their print runs.
